Air tickets and bookings were made earlier in the year, it was somehow at the back of my head that I’d be climbing Mount Kinabalu in October. But reality sank it only when we started training a two weeks ago. It will be another 2 ½ weeks before we scale the mountain.
I’m both excited and admittedly a tad bit apprehensive about it. Since I will be climbing with seven other guys, I would somewhat have to match their physique as not to slow the group down. Nonetheless I’m not going to focus on that but simple enjoy the terrain and the company.
Four years ago, I missed the chance of climbing it. I wasn’t about to let this opportunity pass this time. I had heard many stories, read lots of writings and viewed tons of photos of this beautiful mountain and I just couldn't wait for the moment where I step foot on the highest mountain in South-East Asia!
But for now, it’s building stamina all the way. Swimming or jogging after work, climbing up 14 flights of stairs at work and climbing Nuang every Sunday until the mid of October, this is part of the preparation before the climb. Phew! What relentless workout! I had one ranger girl comment, “By the time you come down from KK, you will be all fit and sexy for your wedding!” Gosh, wedding is only next year, I hope to keep the physique and discipline even after the climb.
