Treasure Quest 2007

It all stemmed from the video Terence and I sent to AXN Asia many months back in hope to be participants of The Amazing Race Asia (TARA). After waiting months for a hopeful answer, it was a resorted to the thought we weren’t chosen. Since I wasn’t expecting much, disappointment didn’t hit me like a ton of bricks. So instead of turning bitter and sore, Terence and I came up with the idea of having a Treasure Quest for RR. Desperately looking for another team player, we sat down for a teh tarik and discussed ‘business’ with Darren Teoh. We pitched the idea and he accepted! Plans started 3 months ago, with proposals, project plans, budgets, committee meetings and finally Treasure Quest 2007 rolled out last Saturday.

72 participants, 12 teams, 32 marshals and 2 paparazzi laced the malls and streets of PJ and KL looking high and low for answers to mind boggling cryptic questions. They hopped from Amcorp Mall, KLCC, KL Sentral and Times Square making the stop at Berjaya Hotel. As if the 5 hour race was not physically and mentally draining enough, the last assignment had them sing Acts 20:24 in a jingle.

Now the best part about being the event’s organizer is the privilege of scripting bizarre assignments and watching them perform it during the quest. One of the questions was: “Pose weirdly with 2 ang moh’s in in KLCC”. So whilst walking through KLCC, we saw teams approaching vulnerable ang moh’s and getting them to comply for a photo.

I wondered if I was the ang moh’s chosen for the photo while traveling in KL, my experience of KL would have deepened a tad more. It’s another tinge of enhancement to our nation’s image. (Oh isn’t it Visit Malaysia 2007?)

Then we had them “pose with a security guard” at KL Sentral, but apparently this was quite difficult to accomplish since many of the security guards told the children that they had to do their job, hence not allowed to “fool around”. However one team got a picture from a particular security guard and later was asked “Will I be on TV?”

After trailing the teams, I did my own post mortem and came up with some personal conclusions:

  • High IQ people might not necessarily win the race, it requires thinking out of the box
  • High spirited people are likely to be winners, regardless whether they take 1st place or last – it’s what they permeate that makes them winners
  • The team leader dictates the mood of the team (relevant to work, family, church etc)
  • If you can’t work as a team, you won’t go far
  • Winning is not everything – it’s the in betweens that matter (Isn’t that true with our spiritual walk? Since we know we are Heaven bound, wouldn’t how big JESUS is in our every day life matter more?)

The "Tai Ko's" and the "Tai Ka Cher"

Just before the race begun...

And the Quest begins!

Hey Shanti!

Good to hear from you! And yes there are still tshirts and patches available. Will reserve it for you.

I won't be around this weekend, but if you want to get the tshirts, Cmdr Theresa should have them.

Otherwise, make a visit on the 9th of Sept. We're having an outpost COOKARAMA. Would be fun to have you join us. And we'd catch up then too...

Hope to see you REAL soon! God bless...
